"Sometimes I get so stressed , I feel like I'm losing control"
It would be impossible to live a totally stress free life and that is because stress exists for very good reasons. It is the subconscious mechanism that helps you either run away from a dangerous situation faster than you ever could under normal circumstances; or that provides you with the adrenalin you need to beat the threat off with a rock. Fear chemicals are released into your system that fuel the automatic actions your body takes, so in a life death situation stress is vital for your chances of survival.
However the subconscious often mistakes things that happen in your ordinary daily life for life threats as it sees the world in very black and white terms, with no shades of grey in between. So, whether you are consciously aware of it or not, that disagreement with a partner or the boss, that rumour of redundancies at work, the experience of sitting in a traffic jam etc can be regarded as a genuine risk of death and fear chemicals are released accordingly.
These chemicals take a heavy toll on the body's systems when present for an extended length of time and can cause physical problems ranging all the way from back ache through irritable bowel syndrome to heart conditions and even deadlier diseases. Extended periods of stress can also have a serious psychological effect on a person.
That is why it is important that you understand the stress mechanism and arm yourself with tools to recognise its outset , the things that trigger it and with methods to minimise its effects.
